Our organic blood oranges from Western Greece are looking beautiful and are almost ready to harvest! We find them special because compared to other oranges, blood oranges have a unique flavour being distinctly raspberry-like in addition to the usual citrus notes. Depending on the variety, the flesh can range from orange with multiple blood-colored streaks to deep blood like, red/maroon color, hence their name. Their distinctive dark flesh color is due to the presence of anthocyanins, a family of antioxidant pigments common to many flowers and fruit, but uncommon in citrus fruits. Let's face it. When it comes to oranges we simply love blood oranges. Is it a crime? |
